Trump, Brazil’s Lula hold phone call, described as very productive
The discussion centered on trade, economic issues, and efforts to combat organized crime.
Lula praised the US decision to remove an additional 40% tariff on certain Brazilian agricultural products, calling the move "very positive." The exemption, which took effect in late November, covered major exports including beef, coffee, and fruits.
He emphasized the need for continued negotiations on other products still under tariffs, highlighting Brazil’s desire to move forward swiftly. Lula previously described the partial tariff removal as a "victory for dialogue, diplomacy and common sense."
The Brazilian leader also underscored the importance of deepening cooperation with the US to tackle international organized crime. In response, Trump reportedly affirmed his willingness to collaborate and pledged full support for joint efforts against criminal networks. Both leaders agreed to follow up soon to review progress on these initiatives.
The call marks a notable easing of tensions after a period in which trade disputes escalated before the resumption of direct dialogue. The additional tariffs had originally been imposed by Trump in an unusual move, citing both perceived unfair trade practices and the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, a political ally of Trump, was recently sentenced to over 27 years in prison for attempting a coup following his 2022 election loss to Lula.
